NHW Alert Notice - Scam Phone Call

Alert message sent 17/08/2020 22:48:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch

This is a message from Val McPherson covering NHW in Aylesbury Vale.
I am sharing this phone scam call that was circulating in Longwick, one of my areas that I cover, as this scam  could happen in Aylesbury Vale too.

I have received  information from two Co-ordinators regarding  a phone scam today. A well spoken lady rings from a number 01753 798836 stating she is either the Local Health Co-ordinator, for Lower Icknield Way, Longwick, asking the co-ordinator if she  would like a red button that hangs around your neck on a chord. If you are unwell or need help you press the button. They only cost £1.00 to buy this product but you need to pay £2.00 a week. The person was told she was not interested and was just about to say thank you when the line went dead.

The 2nd Co-ordinator received a similar message, but this time the lady on the phone changed her introduction claiming she was the Local Rescue Service currently working in Longwick.  She was trying to sell personal alarms and wanted to try and fix up an appointment so that someone could visit. Once again she was being told she was not interested when the phone went dead.
On ringing this number back it just plays music.

I did ring the red button company based in Hitchin, Herts and asked if they have operatives that work under their business trying to sell items , or cold calling. The reply was they never ring up out of the blue and do not have any operatives selling their products in this way. The number I gave they did not recognise either.

This scam has been reported to Action Fraud and Trading Standards.

If you receive a cold call like this do not engage in conversation just put the phone down.
