Romance Fraud

Alert message sent 19/09/2021 13:23:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch

There has been a large increase in online fraud during the Covid pandemic, and one area of  particular concern is Romance Fraud.

Romance frauds happen when the victim thinks they’ve met the perfect partner through an online dating website or app, but the other person is using a fake profile to form a relationship with them. They’re using the site to gain the victim’s trust and ask them for money or enough personal information to steal their identity.

Romance fraudsters use language to manipulate, persuade and exploit their victims.

This e-booklet from the Economic Crime Unit of Thames Valley Police describes the tactics these fraudsters use, to help you, your family and friends stay safe.
